Enacted laws

Enacted means 'officially made', and is a process that varies depending on the type of legislation.

Enacted legislation is legislation in the form it was originally made without any later amendments. Enacted legislation is not up to date – see Current laws.

See Article 2 of the Legislation (Jersey) Law 2021, which describes how legislation is made.

The enacted collection contains:

  • all new legislation, including Laws that have been sanctioned (signed by the King) and registered in the Royal Court

  • United Kingdom Orders in Council extended to Jersey and registered in the Royal Court

  • R&Os as made (passed by the Assembly or signed and sealed by the relevant Minister or body)

There are important historical limitations to the online enacted collection:

  • laws are complete back to 1 January 1961

  • laws enacted before 1 January 1961 are not available online, except the following which are included:

  • laws enacted before the end of 1960 and not repealed as at 11 May 1981

  • laws enacted in the 1950s but repealed before 11 May 1981

  • R&Os are complete back to 1 January 1970

  • R&Os made before 1 January 1970 are not available online unless they had not been repealed as at 31 March 1979

Enacted legislation that is not available online may still be available in printed bound volumes at the Jersey Public Library. There isn't a consolidated index for all pre-1950s laws but each volume contains an index of its contents.

New enacted laws

New enacted laws are added to the website as soon as possible after they are made. This will often be on the same day, but may be later depending on when information about the new law is received.
