Aircraft Registration (Nationality and Registration Marks) (Jersey) Order 2015

THE MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, in pursuance of Article 21 of the Aircraft Registration (Jersey) Law 2014, orders as follows –

1        Nationality and registration mark of aircraft registered in Jersey

(1)     The nationality mark of an aircraft registered in Jersey shall be ZJ.

(2)     The registration mark of an aircraft registered in Jersey shall be three letters assigned by the Registrar from any series of letters between the letters AAA - ZZZ except that the registration mark shall not consist solely of a combination of one or more of the letters I, O, or S.[1]

(3)     The following shall apply in respect of the nationality mark and registration mark on an aircraft registered in Jersey –

(a)     the letters of the nationality mark or registration mark shall be without ornamentation;

(b)     a hyphen shall be placed between the nationality mark and the registration mark;

(c)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall be displayed to the best advantage, taking into consideration the constructional features of the aircraft and shall always be kept clean and visible;

(d)     the letters constituting the nationality mark and registration mark shall –

(i)      be of equal height, and

(ii)      together with the hyphen, all be of the same single colour which shall clearly contrast with the background on which they appear;

(e)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall be painted on the aircraft, or affixed to the aircraft by any other means ensuring a similar degree of permanence, in the manner specified in Articles 2, 3 and 4.

2        Position and size of nationality mark and registration mark

(1)     The position and size of the nationality mark and registration mark on an aircraft (excluding a kite) registered in Jersey shall be as specified in this Article.

(2)     On an aircraft having a fixed wing surface –

(a)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall appear on the lower horizontal surface of the wing structure and on the port wing unless they extend across the whole surface of both wings;

(b)     so far as is possible, the nationality mark and registration mark shall be located equidistant from the leading and trailing edges of the wing;

(c)     the tops of the letters of the nationality mark and registration mark shall be towards the leading edge of the wing;

(d)     the height of the letters of the nationality mark and registration mark shall be –

(i)      subject to clause (ii), at least 50 centimetres, or

(ii)      if the wings are not large enough for the letters to be 50 centimetres in height, the greatest height practicable in the circumstances.

(3)     On an aircraft –

(a)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall appear –

(i)      on each side of the fuselage (or equivalent structure) and shall, in the case of fixed wing aircraft be located between the wings and the horizontal tail surface, or

(ii)      on the vertical tail surfaces;

(b)     when located on a single vertical tail surface, the nationality mark and registration mark shall appear on both sides;

(c)     when located on multi-vertical tail surfaces, the nationality mark and registration mark shall appear on the outboard sides of the outer-surfaces;

(d)     subject to sub-paragraphs (f) and (g), the height of the letters constituting the nationality mark and registration mark shall be at least 30 centimetres;

(e)     if one of the surfaces authorized for displaying the nationality mark and registration mark is large enough for those marks to be 30 centimetres in height (whilst complying with sub-paragraph (g)) and the other is not, a nationality mark and registration mark of 30 centimetres in height shall be placed on the largest authorized surface;

(f)      if neither authorized surface is large enough for the nationality mark and registration mark to be at least 30 centimetres in height (whilst complying with sub-paragraph (g)), a nationality mark and registration mark of the greatest height practicable in the circumstances shall be displayed on the larger of the 2 authorized surfaces;

(g)     nationality marks and registration marks on the vertical tail surfaces shall be such as to leave a margin of at least 5 centimetres along each side of the vertical tail surface.

(4)     On a rotary wing aircraft where owing to the structure of the aircraft the greatest height practicable for the nationality mark and registration mark on the side of the fuselage (or equivalent structure) is less than 30 centimetres –

(a)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall also appear on the lower surface of the fuselage as close to the line of symmetry as practicable;

(b)     the nationality mark and registration mark shall be placed with the tops of the letters towards the nose;

(c)     the height of the letters constituting the nationality mark and registration mark shall be –

(i)      subject to clause (ii), at least 50 centimetres, or

(ii)      if the lower surface of the fuselage is not large enough for the marks to be of 50 centimetres in height, the greatest height practicable in the circumstances.

(5)     Where pursuant to this Article a nationality mark and registration mark of the greatest height practicable in the circumstances are required, that height shall be such as is consistent with Article 3.

3        Width, thickness and spacing of nationality mark and registration mark

(1)     The width, thickness and spacing of the nationality mark and registration mark on an aircraft registered in Jersey shall be as specified in this Article.

(2)     The width of each standard letter of the nationality mark and registration mark and the length of the hyphen between the nationality mark and the registration mark shall be two thirds of the height of a letter.

(3)     The width of the letters M and W of the registration mark shall not be less than two-thirds of their height or more than their height.

(3A)   The width of the letter I of the registration mark shall be one sixth of the height of the letter.[2]

(4)     The thickness of the lines comprising each letter and hyphen of the nationality mark and registration mark shall be one sixth of the height of the letters forming the marks.

(5)     Each letter and hyphen of the nationality mark and registration mark shall be separated from the letter or hyphen which it immediately precedes or follows by a space equal to either one quarter or one half of the width of a standard letter.

(6)     Each space within the nationality mark and registration mark shall be equal to every other space within the nationality mark and registration mark.

(7)     For the purposes of this Article “standard letter” means any letter other than the letters I, M and W.[3]

4        Nationality mark and registration mark to be inscribed on a fire-proof metal plate affixed on fuselage

The nationality mark and registration mark shall be inscribed on a fire-proof metal plate affixed in a prominent position on the fuselage of an aircraft registered in Jersey.

5        Citation

This Order may be cited as the Aircraft Registration (Nationality and Registration Marks) (Jersey) Order 2015.
